Packing for a Round The World Trip – The Difficulties

When preparing for this trip of a lifetime I spent hours and hours going over many lists packing for a round-the-world trip.  From books written by cycle tourists to websites and even spreadsheets, people had put together themselves and sent me.

In the end, I took more than I needed and wished I made decisions on the kit before I went.  In this blog, I hope to convey a few thoughts on what problems you need to account for and ones you can solve on the way without the need to take everything with you! First taste of India: Indian bureaucracy at its finest

Land, clear immigration, pick up bag and bike box, put the bike together and cycle off into the sunset.  Simple.  I landed, headed straight to Immigration and then I had to go back because I needed to fill out a piece of paper with details they already had linked to my passport and e-visa.  I finally cleared immigration.  Picked up the bag, easily.  I’m getting good at this flying stuff.

Bike box.  Now where is oversized luggage?  Found it, ummm… doesn’t seem to be doing much!  Ah, a gentleman in a suit is coming towards me.  ‘Are you expecting anything, Sir?’

‘Um. Yes, my bike box, please’ I replied. It definitely went on the plane, I thought.

The forgotten towns between Montreux and Lausanne

Packing and leaving camp early so I can get to a couple of outdoor shops before lunch. I start by heading downhill; this is always a lovely relief but I was soon shocked by the hills.  I had avoided them on my way through Switzerland and thought my planning was great!  No I just saved the pain till the end.

I had, finally, made the decision to upgrade my tent from my companion of five years, a Wild Country Helm 2, to the MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2.  I had been pondering this decision for about 6 months; I’m a fast decision maker, can’t you see!?!  Although still faster than some leadership teams I know!
